The project is a joint action of The Ministry of Health and The Maria Sklodowska-Curie Memorial Cancer Centre and Institute of Oncology. It is a response to fast-growing rates of morbidity and mortality from urological diseases, especially kidney cancer, bladder cancer and prostate cancer.
The project is unique and has particular meaning not only because it is pioneering in Poland as well as in Europe, but also because of the particular target group which was uncared-for for years. Development and implementation of urological cancer prevention programme with special regard to improving the health of working population of Polish men over the age of 45 years.

The grant agreement no POKL.02.03.01-00-003/10-00 was signed on 22nd of September 2010.

 

TARGET GROUP

  • The project is addressed to:
    • occupational group of employed men aged 45 to 64 who are at high risk of the urological cancer: kidney cancer, bladder cancer and prostate cancer in particular;
    • GPs, occupational medicine doctors and urologists.

The whole population, especially those people who have an impact on men’s health and their health-related decisions, is regarded as the secondary stakeholder.

 

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT

The main objectives of the project include:

  • As for men at age of 45-64 who are at employment, the project aims to:
    • raise health awareness in terms of kidney cancer, bladder cancer and prostate cancer;
    • improve men’s health-related knowledge and attitude towards the symptoms and causes of cancer diseases;
    • give indication of changes in men’s lifestyle especially in terms of determinants responsible for the urinary system cancer, especially tobacco and selected nutritional factors (obesity);
    • enhance professional potential and ability of the working population of the men by maintaining their well-being and good health condition.
  • As for GPs, occupational medicine doctors and urologists the project aims to:
    • update the knowledge and better understanding of behavioral factors which are the main contributors to the urinary system cancer;
    • improve their diagnostic capacities.

 

PLANNED ACTIONS

  • Development and implementation of prevention programme adjusted to the needs of particular employee group (occupational group) of males over the age of 45 and oriented at the reduction of occupational disease occurrence (kidney cancer, bladder cancer and prostate cancer).
  • Epidemiological research, including both statistic data and analysis.
  • Identification of the regions of Poland as well as agglomerations, industries and occupations which are linked to the major determinants responsible for kidney cancer and bladder cancer.
  • Health-awareness surveys among men as well as GPs, occupational doctors and urologists – at the beginning and at the end of the project duration.
    • Sociological analysis of the survey’s results.
    • Analysis of the survey’s results in the aspect of health promotion.
  • Development of cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment guidelines for GPs and occupational medicine doctors. The guidelines were translated and reprinted by courtesy of the European Association of Urology.
  • Target group education:
    • trainings of 6000 GPs, occupational medicine doctors and urologists;
    • health promoting meetings for males.
  • Social media campaign raising health awareness.
    • Advertising campaign in different media e.g.: TV, radio, press, etc.
    • Billboard campaign.
    • Product placement.
    • Interviews.
  • Internet-based information platform for both society and medical doctors.

 

AIMS OF THE PROJECT

  • Implementation of urological prevention programme.
  • Translation, republication and on line posting of the European Association of Urology guidelines.
  • Media campaign.
  • 4 health-awareness surveys.
  • Internet-based information platform.
  • 6000 trained GPs, occupational medicine doctors and urologists.
  • 25 educational meetings for males.
  • Increase of health-related knowledge of employees at high risk of urogenital cancer.
  • Increase of better diagnostic capacities.

 

FINANCING OF THE PROJECT

The project is financed at 85% by the EU funds (European Social Fund) and at 15% by the national budget. The total cost amounts to 24 310 195.40 PLN, over 20 663 666.09 PLN of which is provided by the ESF and the remaining part – 3 646 529.31 PLN comes from domestic sources.
